We've always loved the idea, floated in days of yore, of rolling up to the start line with a cotton cycling cap at a jaunty angle on our head, taking it off and handing it to a pretty thing or eager school child, strapping on our leather casque and rolling away in a parade through the town before the hostilities begin five kilometers up the road.
